Intramuscular Immunoglobulin Products - Quick Guide

Intramuscular products

There are TWO different non-hyperimmune intramuscular immunoglobulin products available in New Zealand. Please check you know which one you will be getting to get the prescription correct.

Please read the letter from NZBS's Chief Medical Officer about this.
  • Normal Immunoglobulin
a 16% solution prepared from New Zealand donor plasma and manufactured by the same company that make PrivigenNZ, CSL Behring.
  • GamaSTAN
a 16% solution manufactured from European and American donor plasma to the same requirements as Normal Immunoglobulin. Due to changes in manufacturing scheduling, GamaSTAN-SD is replacing Normal Immunoglobulin for the foreseeable future.

Other immunoglobulin products

There is currently one subcutaneous product available in New Zealand.

  • Hizentra
a 20% solution, is prepared from European and American donor plasma by the same manufacturer as Privigen NZ, CSL Behring.
There are three intravenous products:
  • Privigen NZ
a 10% solution, is prepared from New Zealand donors' plasma by the same manufacturer as Privigen NZ, CSL Behring. This is the new default intravenous immunoglobulin product.
  • Privigen
As New Zealand is not entirely self-sufficient for subcutaneous immunglobulin, we also have Privigen, manufactured in exactly the same way as Privigen NZ but from European and American donor plasma.
  • Gamunex
a 10% IVIG solution manufactured by Grifols. This is only for patients who cannot tolerate Privigen or PrivigenNZ. We have a small stock of Gamunex. This is available only after discussion with a New Zealand Transfusion Medicine Specialist.
There are several hyperimmune intramuscular products:
